Data Management

Last Updated: February 2026

Oria is designed with a privacy-first architecture where all your data is stored locally on your device. This page explains how your data is managed, backed up, and protected.

1. Local Data Storage

All data you create in Oria — including calendars, events, routines, shifts, to-dos, and preferences — is stored exclusively on your device using SQLite, a robust, industry-standard database engine.

Storage Architecture

  • SQLite Database: Primary data store with WAL (Write-Ahead Logging) mode for crash recovery and data integrity
  • AsyncStorage: Used for non-sensitive preferences and settings (theme, language, tab visibility, etc.)
  • App Group Container: Shared storage for iOS widget data, stored securely on-device

2. Backup System

Oria includes a comprehensive, multi-layered backup system to protect your data:

2.1 Automatic Backups

  • Main Backup: Automatically updated after every data change (with 2-second debounce for efficiency)
  • Secondary Backup: Rotating backup alternating with the main backup — if one gets corrupted, the other remains intact
  • Checkpoint Backup: Created every 50 database operations as an intermediate safety net
  • Pre-Import Backup: Automatically created before any data import to allow undo

2.2 Manual Backups

You can create up to 5 manual backups via Settings → Data Management → Create Backup. Manual backups are user-controlled and can be deleted individually.

2.3 Data Integrity

  • SHA-256 checksums verify backup integrity
  • WAL checkpoint ensures database consistency before backup copies
  • Large-drop safety guard prevents overwriting the best backup if a sudden drop in data count is detected (protecting against corruption)
  • Transaction wrappers prevent partial writes

3. iCloud Integration

Oria offers optional iCloud Drive backup for additional data protection:

  • Native iCloud container support for scheduled automatic backups (configurable intervals: 6h, 12h, daily, 3 days, weekly)
  • Up to 10 backups stored in iCloud with automatic cleanup
  • iCloud data is governed by Apple's privacy policy — we have no access to your iCloud data
  • iCloud backup is entirely optional and can be disabled at any time

4. Export & Import

4.1 Export (.oria Files)

Export your complete data as a .oria file, which includes all calendars, events, routines, shifts, to-dos, and settings. Share via AirDrop, WhatsApp, email, Files app, or any other sharing method on your device.

4.2 Import

Import data from any .oria backup file. Before importing, Oria shows a preview of the file contents (item counts) and creates an automatic pre-import backup. You can undo an import at any time to restore your previous data.

5. Data Deletion

5.1 Deleting Individual Items

You can delete any individual calendar, event, routine, shift, or to-do at any time through the App interface.

5.2 Reset All Data

Settings → Data Management → Reset All Data provides a complete data wipe with a two-step confirmation process. This permanently deletes:

  • All calendars, events, routines, shifts, and to-dos
  • All local backups
  • All preferences and settings
  • All AsyncStorage data

After a reset, the App restarts fresh as if newly installed. This action cannot be undone.

5.3 Uninstalling the App

Deleting Oria from your device permanently removes all locally stored data. Only external backups you created (.oria files saved elsewhere, or iCloud backups) will remain.

6. Database Tools

Oria provides built-in database maintenance tools:

  • Check Database Integrity: Validates the health and consistency of your SQLite database

7. Widget Data

The iOS home screen widget displays today's schedule from a shared App Group container. Widget data:

  • Is stored locally in the App Group UserDefaults
  • Refreshes every 30 minutes or when the App syncs data
  • Contains only today's schedule items (title, time, type, color)
  • Is never transmitted externally

8. Notifications Data

Oria schedules local notifications on your device for events, routines, shifts, and to-dos. Notification data:

  • Is processed entirely on-device using iOS local notification APIs
  • Displays title-only content (no sensitive data in notification body)
  • Can be fully customized or disabled per category in Settings
  • Is not sent to any external server
